Overview

Enabling global satellite communication capability for standard smartphones through a compact, field-ready accessory.

Technologies

Satellite communications (Iridium) | GNSS | Embedded systems | Mobile integration | Power management

Define the Problem

Users operating in remote environments required reliable communication beyond the reach of traditional cellular networks.

Conventional smartphones lacked the satellite communication capability needed to support messaging, tracking and emergency functionality.

Diagnose the Root Cause

Smartphones do not contain the RF hardware, satellite modem architecture or supporting power systems required for global satellite communication.

The challenge required these capabilities to be integrated into a compact, portable form factor while maintaining usability and battery performance.

Key engineering challenges included:

  • Compact system integration

  • RF and antenna implementation

  • Portable power management

  • Seamless mobile interaction

Deliver the Solution

We developed a compact external accessory integrating an Iridium modem, GNSS receiver and battery system into a highly portable design.

The product enabled users to transmit messages and GPS location data globally, while an integrated SOS function provided emergency communication capability in critical scenarios.

Key Outcomes

  • Global messaging capability independent of cellular networks

  • Integrated GNSS tracking and SOS functionality

  • Compact field-deployable design

  • Successfully launched and sustained in market use
